For the first time since the 1970's, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) could be under the control of the whalers, a certain disaster for the world's whales. Despite strong evidence that 'scientifc whaling' is unlawful, Japan plans on killing even more whales next year, including the endangered humpback whale: the singer of the sea. The only way to stop Japanese whaling is for the US government to make it clear that Japan will face serious consequences if it continues killing whales.

Please make a contribution today to help mobilize Americans against whaling. With your support, we’ll alert the American public to this outrage and send a clear message to President Bush that the United States must step up to protect whales for generations to come. Your generous donation will help IFAW protect whales through non-lethal scientific research, ongoing efforts at the IWC and other international forums, and educational and whale-watching programs that promote the beauty of whales.

Japan is killing protected whales in a marine mammal sanctuary, selling illegal whale meat and buying pro-whaling votes in an international decision-making body. More than 25,000 whales have been hunted and killed since the ban on whaling was imposed. Even more shocking, this unsanctioned killing is happening in the protected waters of Antarctica’s Southern Ocean Marine Sanctuary, defying international law. How is this possible? Find out inside.
